Controlling Obesity for a Better You

Weight loss/control is a major concern of many. In America, at least one of every four Americans adheres to a weight-reducing diet at any given time. Ideal body weight is difficult to identify in each person of individual variations, such as gender, age, genetics, and metabolic needs.

When someone says that weight should be on the average, the problems sets in because the “average person” does not exist. Dietician and nutritionists only deals with approximation which should be used in caution since it is only based on averages.

The body mass index (BMI) is used to determine the degree of fatness; it is determined by dividing measured body weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared. Normal BMI ranges from 20-25 kilograms per meter squared whereas obesity reached the BMI of 27.5 kilograms per meter squared.

Morbid obesity is the worst case of obesity wherein BMI reaches 40 kilograms per meter squared or below. This places the person at a high risks for numerous disorders. They have higher mortality or morbidity rates that their peers of normal weight. In terms of cholesterol level, people who are obese reach the level of 275 mg/dl or higher which put the person at risks in acquiring diseases.

Obesity Management

First, the person must be motivated to perform the weight-reduction exercises, diet, or any other therapy suited for him. If you start the management without motivation coming from that person, everything will be useless. It is necessary to inform the obese person that weight management requires a lifetime commitment. You can’t stop whenever you want. Although it’s a little bit demanding, the benefits of which are outpouring.

Then, the obese person must determine his degree of fatness. This is necessary because it will serve as your comparison on how much weight should be lost. Too much weight loss is not good. Weight reduction limits itself to the ideal weight of the person. Obesity and cachexia are opposing poles that should be avoided by the person. The individual shouldn’t aim in getting neither too fat nor too thin. The degree of fatness will also help determine which intervention would perfectly fit the person. If he is severely obese, exercise and diet won’t work instead it already calls for surgery.

Third, determine the lifestyle of the obese person. Obesity management varies and for it to be successfully achieved one should determine the exact way on how to deal with it. Ask the person in which way would he be comfortable, is it doing exercise, diet, medication, or the last resort which is surgery.

Lastly, start the preferred weight reduction method chosen by the obese person. The person could either perform the exercise or diet alone or he could enroll himself to a wellness center to be guided accordingly.

Just like the numerous factors that contribute to obesity, the management also involves several steps for it to be reduced or controlled.
